I subscribed for the rediffmail mobile service by paying yearly subscription and it works cool all the way. I am able to send sms to any mobile in India / US through this service. It is definetely a cool option for people here in US who want to reach out to their friends, instantly. The better thing in the service is that the replies which people send from mobiles comes as an email. Go for it !!

It is going to be one of the most crowded weekend in US. It is the last chance in this year to go out and roam around as the fall gets started and roaming around would be tough. So people celebrate this long labour day weekend by travelling across US cities. We are starting to wisconsin dells in another 2 hours and I am still here in office doing some bug-fixing.

I live in the mid-west US near a highway that leads to Milwaukee. The weird bike noices that I hear are today are from Harley-Davidson Bike lovers who are travelling to Milwaukee for 100th Birthday Bash of Harley-Davidson Company. More than 300,000 bikers converging on Milwaukee. Probably one of the biggest birthday parties ever.

But the hottest thing currently is Madonna open-mouthed kiss with Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears in the MTV Video Music Awards. the camera focused on Justin Timberlake's face as Britney shared the kiss with Madonna and he looked annoyed. What a blank expression on his face to see his ex-girl friend Britney doing it with Madonna. Shankar's Boys were missing in action here !! . Probably they are rocking SAREGAMA in Indian MTV Awards.

Back in Chicago on a business trip and I am all set to miss the screening of boys. But no issues, Boys is screened here on 5th september. I hope to check it out. No idea of watching it in DVD. As such the movie is only to be watched in a theatre.

BTW, the climate here is amazing. Inbetween summer and fall is the best time to be in US. We desis are planning a trip to niagra on the coming long weekend. Not sure if we will make it 'coz the hotels are already booked a couple of months back. We might end up with Wisconsin Dells, a scenic place with tons of theme parks and what not.

Hey!! Look who's drinking pepsi ?. It's my friend who is a staunch believer of the hoax news that PEPSI has PESTICIDES. After the news leaked that colas don't cotain pesticides to the harmful extent, people who challenged me on my note (including this friend, who just gulped his second pepsi for the day) are vanishing around and trying to be defensive. Let's wait for the final decision and then let me take each one of them to buy me a cold cola.

It's been a pretty hectic week. Running around. Hopping from one shop to another and blinking at the shopping list that grows like lord hanuman's tail. ;-)

Read my latest column of RUMBUMBUM in dhwanii called The Times of Boys. It is not only about Shankar's Boys but also about Yuvan Shankar Raja's musical talent. It also talks about a common man's worries about the music industry and CD demon.

Comments please.
Check out writer Sujatha's Srirangathu Devadhaigal story this week called Enn Muthal Tholaikatchi Aanubhavam in vikatan, where he describes a funny incident of his first TV viewing. During the time he clearly brings out the confusions of college guy through his own character. The best part is that even the drawing for the story resembles sujatha's face during his adulthood. FYI : Sujatha did his engineering in MIT, Chennai.

Watched Ben Hur. Again and Again on monday night HBO. A master of a movie. The vastness of the story ground was as big as the chariot race course in the movie. I bet if someone can write a review for a movie like Ben Hur and also do justice to it. Words overflow as thoughts and emotions gush through at the same time. See it to experience it and it is better not to talk about it. Because you can never express what Ben Hur is. It isn't cinema. It is a different animal. Some of my friends told it is a jerk of a movie. Accept. But opinion varies. You see.

Also reading a short story collection by Jayakanthan called Yugasandhi. All of these short stories have been published in anandha vikatan from 1960 to 1963. His foreword really impressed me as much as his stories. It is very evident that these stories aren't for philistines. Not many declare such forewords. If Jayakanthan can only do it, because like Ben Hur he is one offshoot of a writer. Read it to believe it. Recommended reading of Jayakanthan : Oru Manithan Oru Veedu Oru Ulagam, Oru Nadigai Nadakam Parkiraal, Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal and Gangai Engey Pogiral ?.

Watched The LA of bagath GAAN on saturday. Puzzled ?.

Zee Tv was featuring The Legend of Bagath Singh and Sony was featuring Lagaan at the same time. Both are gems of A R Rahman and hence all I could do is to watch both the movies as The The LA of bagath GAAN . In bits and pieces. However didn't afford to miss the final six of Aamir. Independence.

Schwarzenegger's Next Goal on Dogged, Ambitious Path :

Read the well analysed column on the means and motives behind Arnold's governor run in NYtimes.

P.S: Forgot to mention that nytimes needs subscription to view the article.

Aamir Unplugged with the Jawans:

Not only Mariah Carey and Maddona can do it. Even Aamir Khan with NDTV's star girl Barkha Dutt made it to the warfront to inspire the Jawans.
Prannoy Roy
It must have been Aamir's unforgettable experience. Standing amidst the firing range of the Line-of-control, and having fun with the Indian Jawans was a brave job. Great Job Aamir. By the way is he hinting that his next movie ( The Rising - 1857) is about the war of independece.

While Aamir was playing cards with the jawans in a bunker near the LOC, Barkha sipped a hot chai and went asleep in the bunker. Reality TV in making ?

The program of having Aamir Khan in Kargil with the jawans was innovative programming from NDTV. Offlate their programming and their ad campaign have changed widely to cope up with the competition from India Today's Headlines Today channel. Though India Today's Aaj Tak - the hindi new channel is a hit but Headlines Today is still in its infancy and trying to overtake NDTV desperately. But NDTV with its sheer popularity and trust from the people stays in top.

The other good news for NDTV patrons is that Prannoy Roy's The World This Week is returning again with a bang. The ads are out but the dates aren't announced yet. Prannoy Roy is going to present it again and I am sure it is a cool news for many of us. A decade back friday nights are for The World This Week. Especially the newsmakers section is the one which catches my attention. Its then I started appreciating media reporting and journalism. Welcome back Prannoy !!

Shankar's Boys is releasing by this month. Probably on 22nd August or on 29th August. It is a whooping 22 crores of investement and Shankar is careful in placing his film at the right time to grab the collections. In Chennai, it is Devi theatre instead of the usual Satyam. All of shankar's movies from Kadhalan to Mudhalvan were in Satyam. His first fliick Gentleman was in the Alankar which is no more today.

Also it is tough time for other producers to release their film now, only to be over-shadowed by Boys. Boys promos on television today have created enough curiosity and expectation. To sustain this, the movie needs to be released ASAP.

Kamalhassan's interview today on Jaya TV was as cute as his sandiyar sideburns. Some highlights of the interview were when :

a) he said that movies are not like marriage first-nights; being without experience in a costly affair in cinema and hence he prefers theatre artists who have performed more and have a sense of audience.

b) he replied that the amount of literature he has heard is more than his reading.

c) he was honest enough to say in tamil brahmin families, men were exposed to more on english literature and women confined themselves to tamil literature.

d) he was angry that much of good tamil literature are blacked out and on the face of it, popular literature appears to be the only available literature in tamil.

e) he was sure that, be it Sakalakala Vallavan 2 or Virumandi as the new name of sandiyar, people would look only for the story than the name. my belief is that , whatever be the name, people would call it only Sandiyar. It has created so much of hulla-gulla that Sandiyar will stay as Sandiyar in the hearts of the people.

f) he was sure that Illayaraja would take the music to new heights in Sandiyar and it would be a music which when people listen, would say " Where was this music all the time?".

But boys, that is after sometime. Now is the time to start celebration for BOYS.

Don't push the FIZZ away :

Cola Cola and Cola

As politicians go gaga over the cola issue, I have some strong thoughts on them. FYI, COLAS here include all soft drinks.

a) If colas can cause cancer and other diseases, lets have them labelled, COLA DRINKING IS INJURIOUS TO HEALTH. Just like how cigarettes are sold. If Cola needs to be banned, let cigarettes precede them.

b) As the elections near, our indian poiticians are in need of a hot issue. Heck they got a cold cola issue and they are trying dramatically to turn it into a hot one. Pray they can't.

c) Banning colas will only make the direct foreign investers hesitate to invest in India. Such a fast growing economy like India cannot afford to push aside the direct investment money.

d) If there are pesticides in the water, it is the water that needs to be treated and not the colas. There can be regulatory acts to stop the production of colas for sometime until they start producing pure colas.

e) Finally, we are all image overloaded by the media, taken over the by dramas of politicians. Saw on Sun TV the other day, a petty shop owner in Chennai, trying to wash his footwear with a Coke and express his anger on the cola. Dull-headed. Can't think that he had his morning idlis with the money earned by selling colas.

Why jump into the BAN wagon. Some statistics on the cola GULP :

By March 2001, government estimates that 6540 million cold drink bottles were sold annually in the country. In other words, with over a billion Indians, each Indian would be drinking roughly 6 bottles of soft drinks each year (compare: Pakistan, 17 bottles per capita per year; Sri Lanka, 21 bottles; China, 21). In Delhi, the consumption is a whopping 50 bottles per person per year. And now you know why they banned colas in parliament.

The consumer in the free world, they say, is king. So let the king pass judgement, after thinking. Think.

Saw Kakka Kakka aka Kakkha Kakkha yesterday at Devi Theatre. Still writing a quick review on it. If you want an opinion more quicker than it, don't wait. Watch it in a theatre with good sound system and a large screen ( Devi in Chennai to be specific). Amazing Tech.

P.S: Also trying!! (mind it....trying) to write a short story for writer sujatha's short story within 100 words contest in kumudam. His latest column Chinna Sindhanaigal sports a short story contest. Prize. Selected stories to be awarded 100 bucks for each word in that story. Take a spin. Go to Kumudam.

Read in the biography of Bharat Ratna M.S Subbulakshmi also known as MS, the carnatic singer of Tamil Nadu with god's own voice :

Some decades back a summit was conducted by Indian National Congress at the Congress grounds, Chennai. M.S was requested to perform a carnatic kutchery (vocal performance of carnatic music), for which she was paid just 25 paise ( 1/4 th of rupee). The total collection from that programme amounted to a whooping 50 thousand rupee. One of the most profitable programmes in the music history !!

During a music festival held in London, M.S was performing before the famous desi composer Zubin Mehta. Zubin Mehta was sitting amongst the audience and was listening to the amazing voice of M.S. After the programme, he went to M.S, thanked her for the great performance and announced that his music could stand no where near her vocals and requested his performance to be cancelled that day.

As she sings Kausalya Supraja Rama Poorva Sandhya Pravarthathey.... ( Venkatesa Suprabhatham ), everyday morning in my ears, I am sure it is going to be a yet another great day for me. Listen to this great verses and I am sure you will fall in love with her mesmerising voice. Also recommended Meera Bhajans by M.S.
Here is what my ex-boss Ragu has to say about my blog. It is a cool summary on the crux of blog. Each of the sentences given below is the subject of my random blog note written in this blog. The poetic-verse style is amazing. Thanks !

Anandha Vikatan and Kumudam are getting their new looks. These two tamil weeklies are the top sellers in this weekly magazines.

Anandha Vikatan aka Vikatan has already pushed three weeklies with their new look. The main change in the look and feel of Vikatan are the colors and pictures used all over the book. It feels good to see the growth of tamil dailies and I am happy that their market is expanding beyond horizons. Even in a desi street of Chicago, I happen to stumble over a shop that sells Vikatan. Whats amazing about Vikatan is the same quality of content and information they provide. If you know to read tamil Anandha Vikatan is a must-read magazine.

Kumudam is also jumping in the renovation band-wagon and has announced drastic changes in their look-feel-content.

Writer Sujatha has a column for himself in both the magazines. He is penning the Ver II of Srirangathu Devadhaigal in Vikatan. Chinna Sandeygangal (small doubts) in Kumudam which is about everyday thoughts and scientic truths.

A great weekend today except the sprain in my neck due to my bad sleeping postures of last night. It's an irritating pain.

Kakkha Kakkha starring Surya - Jyothika has released yesterday. One of the most expected movies offlate. Uyirin Uyirey song is already a super dooper hit and it now the most used ringtone in tamil nadu.

Good to see George Fernandes take a ride in the Flying Coffin aka MIG-21, yesterday. Though it must have been 200% tested perfect, you might not know when a MIG-21 might crash.
